WWW - Witches, Wiccans and Wizards.

Strictly speaking... all wiccans are not witches.

Some wiccans actually call themselves "witches" but do not practice or advocate witchcraft.

It is also quite possible that non witchcraft practicing wiccans who are male will also call themselves "witches" however some prefer to be known as Wizards.

Hard to get your head around? Well yes, it is at first.

But just remember that you can have wiccan witches and wizards as well as say islamic witches and wizards or christian witches and wizards all who practice witchcraft.

This is because Wicca is a religion while strictly speaking witchcraft is not.

In our own coven here in the East Midlands of England, we have wiccan witches and wizards as well as witches and wizards from of faiths... mainstream and alternative.

Most of us in our group however are wiccan who practice witchcraft who are bother males and female with them preferring to be called witches and wizards respectively.

Secrecy

No one outside of a coven will usually ever know the identity of its members.

A sensible precaution in view of the history toward adherents of our traditions and faith.

Although the last witchcraft act in England was repealed in 1951 there is potential for hostility not only from the indigenous communities in which we reside but also with immigration from those who may be from cultures who when adversity strikes may act from habits formed from a different tolerance landscape.

High Cross Quarter - What Do Wiccans Believe?

Traditions vary from coven to coven...

First let us say that the traditions followed in wicca, although essentially following the same principles do vary not only from coven to coven but also vary over time within the same coven. Boundaries amongst traditions are loosely drawn with very few covens failing to develop or evolve their ritual and practices.

The narratives likewise follow the same principles but again vary. No one can say one coven is better than another in terms of its adherence to what is or may be considered "core" wicca. (Gardnerian Wicca) named after the great Wizard Gerald Gardner. (1884 - 1964) and the pre-eminent modern Witch Doreen Valiente (1922 – 1999).

Some people view wicca as "witchcraft" lite. Well this view is rather misleading as wicca simply is not witchcraft.

Some even feel that wicca uses benign witchcraft. Well what we feel in our group is that if that is the case then they are witches in the very truest sense of the word as much as practitioners of non benign witchcraft would be.

Wicca is a Polytheistic Neo-Pagan Nature Religion

In short... "The worship of or belief in more than one god."

Wiccans belive in a male and female godset. A sexual pairing deity
