High Cross Quarter - Wicca in the NewsReligious Tolerance and George W. Bush.
"I don't think witchcraft is a religion. I would hope the military officials would take a second look at the decision they made." G. W. Bush (R), as Governor of Texas. As interviewed on ABC's Good Morning America, 24th June 1999. George W. Bush disapproved of Wiccan soldiers being given the same religious rights as others in the military. George Bush perhaps ought to familiarise himself with the establishment clause in the 1st amendment of the US constitution. In particular the part that reads "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..." However, the views of our own coven here in leicester is that strictly speaking GW was correct. Witchcraft is not a religion... however wicca is. The soldiers were wiccans. They may also have been practitioners of witchcraft but then again they may not. Again we remind you that our own view and position is that practitioners of witchcraft can be in any religion. However as wiccans are also called witches care should be taken not to confuse that as meaning that they also practice witchcraft. World Witchcraft Conference - Norway June 28th 2007
And so the conclusion drawn at Vardo may be correct but only due to extreme and dedicated precaution. (Vardo was the location of a 17th century norwegian witch hunt in which about 80 witches were burned alive. |
Quotes about Wicca."We should educate people that 'Witch' is not evil but ancient and positive. The first time I called myself a 'Witch' was the most magical moment of my life." Margot Adler
